The Crow fans, rejoice! Today it was announced by Lionsgate that the upcoming reboot, starring Bill Skarsgård (IT), is due to be released on 7th June 2024.
Even more excitingly, the first story details have finally been revealed in the below synopsis for the movie:
Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.
Helming this one is director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell), and the movie also stars FKA Twigs, Danny Huston (30 Days of Night), Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).
It’s kind of a big deal to be rebooting The Crow. There’s so much love for this movie, particularly in the goth community, so Sanders must be feeling a massive weight on his shoulders right now. Lionsgate have also acknowledged the massive responsibility.
In a statement released by Lionsgate, Executive VP Acquisitions and Co-Productions Charlotte Koh:
We appreciate what The Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology. To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.
The producers of the film have also released a joint statement, saying:
The original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on. We are thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today’s audiences that respects this legacy. Rupert has masterfully brought new dimensions to create a contemporary universe for this timeless saga of undying love, and we can’t wait to share this vision with film audiences.
Got to say, I’m a little trepidatious at the idea of this remake, but I am hopeful it’s going to be good and worth watching. It doesn’t mean for one second it’ll take anything away from the original, though (in my eyes, at least).
