Maybe Geek Native is one of a few TTRPG news sites you visit; perhaps you’re here for some other geeky discovery, and in either case, perhaps Rascal will interest you.
Rascal is a worker-owned, reader-supported outlet built by a trio of industry journalists passionate about bringing you the stories that matter – from labour rights to indie game launches. You might well recognise the names;
- Lin Codega,
- Rowan Zeoli,
- Chase Carter.
Lin, who recently was lost by io9, has broken some weighty D&D news. Chase Carter, we know from Dicebreaker, and Rowan is a journalist and co-founder of WriteHive.
Rascal argues that traditional media is failing the TTRPG community. I wonder where the team places Geek Native. They argue that outlets are closing, talented writers are being sidelined, and too often, corporate interests overshadow the real stories.
To push back against that, Rascal is committed to hard-hitting reporting, bold criticism, and celebrating the heart and soul of the industry.
The paywall-protected site offers;
- Unbiased, fearless reporting on the TTRPG scene – the good, the bad, and even the ugly.
- News, reviews, and deep-dive investigations into the industry giants.
- Spotlights on indie creators, labour movements, fundraisers, and more.
- A platform for YOUR voice! Our user-submitted announcements section is open to all.
- Plans for fellowships and contributor programs to uplift diverse voices in the scene.
Yep, paywall
Rascal says success stories like Defector and others inspire them and are betting on a subscription model powered by the community. If all goes to plan, there will be no ads and no corporate overlords – just unfiltered TTRPG journalism at three subscription levels.
Geek Native notes
I was offered a password to get through the paywall for a month and read the site. I was also given a press release that summarises Rascal. There’s an irony here, and I’ll fall on it; I spent a few hours poking the site and then wrote up the press release. I’m still a few days late with the news. I think that rather makes team Rascal’s point.
