Designer Lee Gold crafted Land of the Rising Sun, drawing on her extensive interest in Asian history, sparked by travels to Japan in 1975. That same year, she founded Alarums and Excursions, a groundbreaking publication vital to the early RPG scene.
Alarums’ discussions popularized concepts like dice notation and character sheets and even featured one of the earliest Samurai character class designs. Its culture of innovation influenced RPG luminaries, and historian Jon Peterson credits Alarums for examples of dice notation and character sheets for the earliest use in print of the term “THAC0”.
