Yeah, yeah… I said it. Them’s fighting words. But, can you really blame me? I’m excited because it’s a) looking more and more likely that Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki is going to direct the sequel, and whilst he’s at it, he’s going to make it with an opposing Kaiju!
Okay, let me catch you up a little bit first. In a previous interview,
If I were to direct the next Godzilla movie, I would like to do a sequel to this one. There have been two standalone Godzilla films in a row now, so perhaps the next one will need to feature a villain monster.
That was the first hint. The next one came during a recent interview with Empire, where Yamazaki shared further thoughts on the idea:
I don’t know if anyone has achieved a more serious tone of kaiju vs kaiju with human drama, that challenge, is something I would like to explore.
When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it’s very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component.
So, let’s say this were going ahead, who could Godzilla be fighting? Well, some of his previous foes have included King Ghidorah, Destroyah, Gigan, and others. It could be a number of options!
But the more exciting part of this story is the fact that Yamazaki wants to actually make an enjoyable Kaiju vs. Kaiju movie, without taking away from the strong human element. And if anyone can pull it off, it’s him!
However, I’ll warn you now, this one might be a while down the line for Yamazaki, who said:
I can tell you [the Minus One sequel’s] not going to be my next film. I’ve already got my next film in development that I’m working on but will it be the one after that? That remains to be seen.
Welp, whenever it gets made, I’ll be here for it. And in the meantime, guess I’ll check out whatever Yamazaki is cooking up next.
