Tanya Floaker has brought an RPG about shame and burning someone alive in a wicker man as a sacrifice to bring back the sun running for a few more days in the dying moments of Kickstarter’s Zine Quest.
There’s a free, 100% off preview of the game on Itch, or you can leap straight to supporting the crowdfunded project.
Tradition hides a monstrous bargain. Solstice, a folk horror RPG, thrusts you into a desperate struggle for survival within the confines of rural Scotland. As young adults, you’ll face the chilling reality that to be The Chosen of the Solstice is to meet a fiery doom within the wicker man.
Would your players go for that?
The setting is Moncrieffe, a town that’s held to the Old Ways, and as the longest night draws near, there’s drinking, dancing, fireworks and a young adult doomed/blessed to be Chosen.
Tanya asks, “Which side of tradition are you on?”
Would you die to bring back the sun?
The game suits four to six mature players, and as a one-shot, it takes about 2 to 4 hours as players compete to pick scene types they control. Influence tokens are used as a currency here with bids made.
The player-versus-player aspect of the game keeps it to no or low prep as the scenes craft themselves.
The game is free already, but by backing £1 if you’re on a low-income challenge, you support the project and email updates about progress, which includes the release of some stickers.
Everyone else can support the game by pledging £10, which also gets you onto the Kickstarter alerts and an email update.
There’s a physical copy at £15 for those on low incomes, an early bird alternative at £20 with stickers and a print+digital combo without if you miss the stickers.
There’s also a very limited £50 tier that gets you a hand-made certificate to confirm you really are one of the Chosen of the Solstice.
The digital files are due in March, the print in June, and the campaign closes as soon as March 3rd.
