The more we hear about Alien: Romulus, the more curious we get about exactly what is coming from Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez.
The latest tease to come out is from one of its stars, David Jonsson who has called it a “very, very, very different” approach to the franchise.
Jonsson recently spoke to MovieWeb, and here’s what he had to say:
I know that it’s very, very, very different. I think Alien was slightly before my generation, in terms of its depth and its impact at the time, but you know, we have such an incredible spin on it. And we had Fede Álvarez as our director, Ridley Scott producing it. It was incredible to work with those people, and opposite Cailee Spaeny, who is just a brilliant actress. I think it’s going to be cool. I’m very excited.
Okay, so what we already know is that the film is set between the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens, and it’s a completely standalone story. But what’s going to be so very, very, VERY different about it?
The premise for Alien: Romulus is that a “group of young people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” It’s also been described by Alvarez as a “really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.” Hmmm.
I’m excited to be getting a new Alien movie, with some of the team behind the original movies, but I’m also a bit on guard right now. And considering some of the other big franchise movies on the cards right now, I think it’s fair to feel that way.
Also included in the cast are Isabela Merced, Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu.
And this nugget from Spaeny is incredibly reassuring:
It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie. They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.
The script for this one was written by Rodo Sayagues, with Ridley Scott and Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler) as producers for Scott Free.
You’ll have to wait a wee while for Alien: Romulus, though – it’s out in cinemas on 16th August.
