“Haters gonna hate” seemed to be the order of the day after Evil Hat announced they had secured the Tomb Raider TTRPG license. Geek Native peek at some of the wibbles from the insecure and one of the comments was that the cover didn’t even show Lara Croft.
Now, if you pass muster, you can playtest as Lara.
The official Shadows of Truth playtest is now open for application.
Evil Hat aren’t (yet, anyway) giving away free starter packs for anyone to download. There’s a submission form which wants to know whether you have a DriveThruRPG account, your social media and your experience with both tabletop RPGs in general and with the Tomb Raider computer games.
The indie tabletop publisher has already addressed “Can I play Lara?“. A design diary said,
We understand that the possibility of playing Lara Croft as a Seeker in your game is an exciting prospect. Because you can create any character you want to play, we wanted to make it easy to play a version of Lara appropriate to your campaign. You can draw inspiration from your favorite stories of the legendary raider. Or, you could entirely re-imagine a version of Lara based on an alternate storyline. The magic of TTRPGs is that the story that your group tells is whatever you want it to be, so follow your inspiration.
Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth is Powered by the Apocalypse game, which brings a ruleset familiar to many people, but it is not 5e.
The playtesters, who’ll also have to join a special Discord server, will likely be invited by Evil Hat to discuss how they found the rules. If you’re not that experienced with PbtA games then you’ll be bringing a different but just as valid perspective. Evil Hat say they’re looking for people with “enthusiasm, curiosity, and an open mind”.
