I love a good satire, and Caitlin Cronenberg‘s Humane is promising to be a great example of the genre.
The world has a radical plan to deal with climate change, and in this movie that means a 20% cull of the population. A family dinner goes radically off-piste when a couple’s plan to participate in a governmental euthanasia programme hits a small snag…
Featuring Peter Gallagher (American Beauty, Palm Springs) as the badly planning patriarch; and Jay Baruchel (Blackberry, Man Seeking Woman) and Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek) as his children, this is giving me strong vibes of Battle Royale meets 2021’s environmental fable and family Christmas horror, Silent Night.
I especially love the character Bob, played by Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars’ dad in Veronica Mars), the plain-speaking blue-collared contractor just trying to do his job. I have a feeling he’s going to be a standout character in the final cut.
Humane is released in the US on April 26th 2024, with hopefully not long to wait for a release in the UK. (Or else maybe only 80% of us will get to see it.)
