With Barbie under her belt, and news of producing a Sims movie next, there seems to be a bit of a running theme for Margot Robbie, who’s now also teaming up with Lionsgate to produce a Monopoly movie.
Hasbro Entertainment is producing the film in collaboration with LuckyChap (Robbie’s company), and her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara.
Back when the movie was first announced last year – before LuckyChap and Robbie were involved – it was all very vague regarding what the movie would actually be about, and the kind of story they want to tell.
Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said at the time: “This sale fully aligns with our strategy, and we are pleased to bring the process to a successful close.”
He added: “Lionsgate’s management team is experienced in entertainment and adept at driving value, and we’re glad to have found such a good home for our eOne film & TV business. We look forward to partnering with them, especially on a movie adaptation of Monopoly.”
However, according to Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson, Robbie and her team are coming in with “a clear point of view” on the project, so that sounds promising.
He said: “I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap. They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join Monopoly with a clear point of view.
He added: “We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.”
Hmmm. With news of all these beloved popular games being turned into movies recently, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Stretch Armstrong movie – which has been doing the rounds being picked up and put down again since the late ’90s – rears its rubbery head.
I mean, you’d think now would be the perfect time, right?
As for the Monopoly movie, I am questioning whether it really needs to be made at all. But maybe that’s just me – and Robbie’s got a good track record, so she’s probably one of the best people to be on board.
