Ben Tobbit‘s OSR TTRPG Black Powder and Brimstone looks excellent, and Ben is the art talent and designer. The art is heavy and rules-light grimdark fantasy work with MORG BORG, but you do not need it to play the game.
The quickstart is free and downloadable, 28 pages to get you started. You can then jump to the Kickstarter, check out the pitch, and back the project.
VaterLand burns. Religious fanatics, famine, and creatures from nightmares ravage the land. As a desperate rogue, you fight for survival in this grim world. Loot, trade, hunt bounties or fight for your life.
Inspired by MORG BORG, Back Powder and Brimstone brings rules for cavalry, chases, mercs, travel, campaign, going mad and, well,… getting drunk.
The core rules have four stats;
- Agility
- Presence
- Strength
- Toughness
Tests: Roll a d20, add your relevant Ability score, and try to beat a Difficulty Rating (usually 12).
- Combat:
- Natural 20 on attack rolls = automatic critical hit with devastating effects.
- Armor Tiers:
- Light (reduces damage by d2)
- Medium (reduces damage by d4)
- Heavy (reduces damage by d6)
Player-Facing Rolls: Players roll Agility to dodge attacks, which means there are no more hidden GM rolls, for good or bad!
Pick from five main classes, with a total of fifteen subclasses, and create a unique character in minutes to get straight into the action.
Backers who pledge SEK 335, which is about £25, will get the PDF edition of Black Powder and Brimstone as a thank-you reward.
Those supporters who step up to SEK 520, £40, will get the RPG’s hardback and access to add-ons.
At £55, the PC pad of character sheets is added to the rewards, and then at £65, so is a PDF ebook of the game’s art.
A special edition of Black Powder and Brimstone swaps out the standard hardcover for backers at £70. If you want both, such as one for the collector’s item shelf and another for the gaming table, then the £100 pledge covers that.
The Kickstarter adds the Book of Spells at a £119 tier and a custom illustration at £596.
There is a retailer tier but the general deliverables are slated for Feburary 2025 and the Kickstarter runs until May 25th.
