The Bundle of Holding’s Traveller4 deal winds up on the 20th of May. In other words, we’ve 4 days for Traveller4.
The recently revived September 2019 Traveller4 Bundle offers a unique opportunity to revisit the controversial 1996 Fourth Edition of the classic Traveller SFRPG. As detailed in Shannon Appelcline’s “Designers & Dragons: The ’90s,” the creation of Traveller4 was a tumultuous affair, marked by a rushed development cycle and a series of questionable design choices.
Following the closure of GDW, the original publisher of Traveller, the rights reverted to designer Marc W. Miller. He subsequently licensed the game to Imperium Games, a short-lived venture led by industry veteran Ken Whitman. With financial backing from Courtney Solomon’s Sweetpea Entertainment, Whitman assembled a team of GDW veterans and Traveller enthusiasts to develop a new edition.
The goal was to recapture the spirit of Classic Traveller while exploring the early days of the Third Imperium, dubbed “Milieu 0.” However, the resulting Traveller4 rulebook, cobbled together in just four months, was met with mixed reactions.
Critics pointed to its sloppy editing, lacklustre artwork and layout, and disjointed rule system despite having some individually well-designed components.
Despite its flaws, Traveller4 remains an intriguing chapter in the history of this iconic science fiction roleplaying game. The Traveller4 Bundle allows fans and newcomers to experience this unique take on the universe and form their own opinions.
