Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster is apparently producing a stop-motion animated film based on the classic dark tale of Hansel & Gretel.
Aster is set to produce along with Lars Knudsen, with the film being directed by Chilean filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña (The Hyperboreans), which is interesting as they’ve both previously worked together with Aster on Beau Is Afraid.
I say the film is based on Hansel & Gretel, as this version of the story is expected to be quite different and will “twist the fairy tale into inimitable shapes.” I’m actually quite excited about how this will turn out!
León recently spoke about the film, saying: “It’s our very personal adaptation of the classic fairy tale, with the main difference that Hansel and Gretel are both boys in this version, at least at the beginning of the story. The story itself gets lost.”
Aster also commented, saying: “Cociña and León are among the true originals working in animation right now. You can trace their sensibility back to several artists of the uncanny, but there is no real analogue for the effect that their work produces in the viewer.”
This promises to be a really dark, intriguing watch – I love stop-motion animation and the potential to do some really off-the-wall things is strong with this one.
