It’s not unusual for new research to suggest that tabletop roleplaying games are good for you. Now, in London, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster City Council have stepped up to do something about it.
The city council has partnered with the CIC tabletop group RP Haven to launch Young Dragons. RP Haven already coordinates TTRPG gaming clubs up and down the UK. The Young Dragons is a kids club in select libraries and schools.
The after-school TTRPG club uses specially trained GMs who can run fun and safe games for kids with disability (SEN) requirements.
David Coulter, Community Director The Role Play Haven CIC, Specialist Paediatric Occupational Therapist and Sensory Integration Practitioner, told press;
We are thrilled to collaborate with Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster City Council to bring the joy, learning, and love of role-playing games to children and young people through our innovative new project, Young Dragons.”
Young Dragons is a fantastic new project aimed at creating role-playing clubs for children and young people. We are thrilled to partner with Chelsea and Kensington to bring the joy, learning, and love of role-playing games to children and young people.”
RP Haven has said it is looking to expand its GM team in the near future and is looking for GMs with a professional background as a teacher or therapist.
Tabletop gaming companies such as Mantic have already assisted the project by supplying minis. Miniatures and custom maps assist with visualisation and accessibility.
Sarah Newman, Executive Director Children’s Services for RBKC and WCC, added;
There are so many benefits for children playing role playing games, including having fun whilst being creative and collaborative and enhancing their numeracy and literacy skills. This collaboration is very exciting.”
The potential of councils across the UK setting up similar kids clubs, buying a host of games and introducing more people to tabletop RPGs is exciting.
