Old School Revival (OSR) enthusiasts and fans of gonzo fantasy role-playing games (RPGs) get ready to delve into the Unfathomable Underworld with the new Operation Unfathomable bundle.
Designed by Jason Sholtis, this campaign setting offers an adventure for both OSR retro-clones and Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG by Goodman Games. The premise is simple yet thrilling: the Sorcerer-King’s son has absconded with the powerful Nul Rod and escaped into the Unfathomable Underworld, a subterranean realm teeming with strange creatures and untold dangers.

Players take on the roles of fledgling adventurers tasked with pursuing the rogue prince into this bizarre cavern world. What awaits them is a unique blend of the familiar and the fantastical:
- Civilized fungoids: Intelligent mushroom-like beings with their own society and culture.
- Bat-winged dwarves: A unique twist on the classic dwarven race, adapted for life in the subterranean realm.
- Two-headed giant ape mummies: Guardians of ancient temples, their imposing presence a threat to any who dare disturb their slumber.
- Decapitante soldiers: Headless warriors whose combat prowess remains undiminished despite their lack of heads.
- Psychephages: Mind-eating creatures that prey on the sanity of their victims.
- Death-ray revolvers: Futuristic weapons with the power to disintegrate their targets.
- The ruins of the Genocide Beetle civilisation: A reminder of a once-great empire now reduced to crumbling ruins.
- The Fizzy Drink of Ocular Autonomy: A bizarre concoction that causes eyeballs to detach and float freely.
- Shaggath-Ka the Worm Sultan: A powerful worm-like being who rules over a vast subterranean empire.
This setting is not for the faint of heart. Beginning characters will face numerous perils, and survival is far from guaranteed. However, the Unfathomable Underworld promises great rewards for those with cunning, wit, and a healthy dose of caution.
Jason Sholtis wrote on the Unfathomable Kickstarter campaign.
I wrote Operation Unfathomable originally as a one-off adventure and for utility as a convention scenario. As such, the gloves were off both in terms of danger level for player characters and the campaign-changing potency of the enchanted treasures they might run off with.
Going against my own advice, I used it to start a campaign. Four years and hundreds of game-hours later, the campaign continues (and is still fun). As every DM knows, there is no substitute for play when it comes to breathing life into a setting. I believe the Underworld of Operation Unfathomable has that lived-in feel precisely because it has been explored extensively at the table and its secrets probed by a number of minds sharper than my own. (I have awesome players.)”
