As someone who monitors Kickstarter’s TTRPG scene daily, I see pitches every week claiming to be the next evolution in roleplaying. I don’t need new core rules blasting through $1,000,000 with days left on the clock.
The Dungeon Coach’s crowdfunder for DC20 has done just that. While the Coach cites 5e and Pathfinder as inspiration, the pitch is for a point-based action economy. You can see the progress of the campaign on the pitch page.
There’s a free-to-download DC20 preview with 158 pages in the Playtest Rules and additional content for the Monster Guide and character sheets.
In summary, DC20 has only four attributes Might, Agility, Intelligence and Charisma and characters get four action points to spend during combat. In addition, spellcasters get Mana Points, and martial-based characters get Stamina Points.
The Dungeon Coach, Alan Bjorkgren, is a TTRPG YouTuber with 68K followers and a Patreon-provider with nearly 3000 members. The latter shows that people are willing to pay cash every month for his content.
DC20 builds its point-based approach onto a d20 mechanic and wraps those around terms that 5e players will be familiar with and it’s clear from the million-dollar success that this works for very many gamers. There’s over 13k roleplayers pledged to support DC20 and the campaign runs until July 2nd.
Mix and Match Your Ancestry
All Ancestries have a simple default set of 5 Ancestry Traits that make them unique. Players can choose to mix and match Ancestries, based on their 2 parents’ Ancestries, to create something entirely unique. Combine any of the 5 Ancestry Traits from both parents and you have your very own custom Ancestry from scratch!New Class Design
DC20 truly elevates and innovates each and every Class that you’re used to seeing in fantasy TTRPGs. Each Class is distinct, unique, and fun to play. Druids can sculpt the nature around them, Barbarians have SHOUTS, Clerics get Blessings, Wizards can put Sigils on the ground, Bards can start a performance with magical properties, Fighters get a Weapon Arsenal, Monks can shift between stances while fighting and running on walls. All Classes feel great and accomplish their “class fantasy” at level 1, and it only gets better from there!
Backers at $30, which is about £24, pick up the first thank you reward in the campaign, and that’s the DC20 core rules in PDF. At this tier, supporters can also buy into the optional add-ons.
At $65, backers get the PDF and the DC20 hardback as well which means shipping needs to be added on later.
Some of the extras are bundled in at the $95 tier, which does not include the hardback, but does offer PDF copies of DC20, the Magic Item Collection, One Shot Collection, Monster Collection, the adventure Curse of Wolk’s Peak, Advanced Guide Collection and digital art collection. $145 adds the DC20 physical book back in.
There is a deluxe hardcover edition which is included in the $265 tier, along with the PDFs, purple dragon dice and DC20 action tracker.
There’s a group bundle at $595, which many dozens of people have supported, that offers two hardbacks (one deluxe, one normal), the PDFs and extra dice and trackers.
The top tier is $795, which adds in a signed DC20 book, a limited edition t-shirt and a DC20 personal custom creation.
Delivery is slated as June 2025 for the digital items and October for the physical.
