Publisher lumen has released the Pay What You Want QuickQuest. It’s 10 pages long, has a recommended price of $1 and introduces you to solo RPGs.
QuickQuest is system agnostic and begins by saying why you should check it out. Perhaps you’re tempted by solo RPGs but need help knowing where to start, you’re overwhelmed by complicated systems, or you spend all your time prepping and not playing.
I can assure you that you won’t be overwhelmed by QuickQuest. To start with, it’s well laid out, well written, and very easy to read. However, there’s no system, random tables, or method to determine success.
I propose a better subtitle for QuickQuest, which is “Journalling Games Made Easy,” because the book suggests you write down (or voice record) the ledger of your quest. The next step is to follow the structure of imagining somewhere, meeting someone and doing something.
To my mind, that’s a simple framework for a journalling game. Most journalling games have an angle or some other technique to provide structure or surprise. QuickQuest offers a light structure. However, doing so reveals how straightforward the concept is, and if you had been overwhelmed by mechanics before, you wouldn’t be by this approach.
While not being overwhelming is a success, lumen doesn’t have much help or support for people struggling to imagine things or looking for something unexpected to happen. It’s hard to surprise yourself with an idea.
Overall
A low-price/free download that’s professionally done and with an elementary introduction to solo roleplaying. To be harsh, it’s more of a series of prompts to imagine and write down.
