Despicable Me 4 is out at the cinemas (Fandango | Cineworld) and is the first in seven years. Wow. Really. I guess it’s the Minions that have been keeping us company.
Gru was a supervillain, but now he’s joined the Anti-Villian League and, therefore, is a superhero. As it’s Superhero Week, we can ask an important question. What is that question? Gru, can you cosplay him?
Several cosplayers and costume makers show that we can. Let’s take a look!

Clothesmonaut Gru
Once again, we return to 2013, when Clothesmonaut found this Gru but could not identify the model.

Just the nose
I think it’s Gru’s chest shape that makes him very hard to cosplay but we can get some help on that mighty nose.
Etsy retailer KOllective By Kelly O has this Gru nose prosthetic. Quite rightly, Kelly says you could use this for Mr Burns, too.
I’m totally lost – who is Gru?
Gru is the main protagonist of the Despicable Me franchise. In the first film, he is introduced as a supervillain who adopts three girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, as part of a scheme to steal a shrink ray. However, he eventually grows to love the girls and abandons his evil plans.
Gru’s backstory is revealed in the prequel film, Minions: The Rise of Gru. He is portrayed as a young boy in the 1970s who dreams of becoming a supervillain. He is inspired by a group of supervillains called the Vicious 6 and eventually applies to join them. However, he is rejected and decides to prove himself by stealing a valuable artefact.
He is initially portrayed as cold-hearted and driven by ambition, but his interactions with the girls and his own experiences lead him to become more compassionate and caring.
The Despicable Me franchise has succeeded commercially, and Gru has become a popular and recognizable character. He is known for his bald head, large nose, and thick accent. He is also a skilled inventor and engineer, creating a variety of gadgets and vehicles.
Gru’s journey from supervillain to loving father is a central theme of the Despicable Me franchise. It is a story about redemption, family, and the importance of love.
At the end of each Superhero Week article, you’ll find a teleport link that will whisk you off to a random superhero post elsewhere and elsewhen on the blog. Dare you?
