Blumhouse has just dropped the trailer for upcoming horror thriller Afraid starring John Cho, who has to defend his family from the AI home device that’s does the opposite of making life easy.
Cho’s character Curtis and his family “are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way.”
Right now, I’m unsure of whether the Afraid trailer really sells it for me, to be honest. The vibe seems similar to some other AI-themed horror movies we’ve seen over the past year, and there are parts of the trailer where I’m already finding it hard to suspend my disbelief.
HOWEVER I will be watching this anyway, because I’m intrigued and I generally enjoy AI horror – plus, I like to keep tabs on these things as some sort of defence mechanism for the AI uprising when it comes. (Think of it as similar to women and true crime addiction – it’s comforting arming ourselves with information against rapists, murderers and evil AI!)
Also starring in the movie, we have Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, Ashley Romans, Greg Hill, Riki Lindhome, Wyatt Lindner, Isaac Bae, Todd Waring, and David Dastmalchian, with Keith Carradine.
Here’s the trailer, check it out:
And we can look forward to seeing Afraid at cinemas from 30th August.
What do you think of the trailer for Afraid? Will you be watching when it’s released, and are you having the same reservations I am?
