NOTE: Spoilers for what’s aired so far – no spoilers past season two, episode four.
House of the Dragon AKA Big Dragon House season two is now well underway, and if Reddit is to be believed, it seems some people have been quite unprepared for it. Don’t ask me why. I’ve been dreading this season, but am watching it purely because I’m already too invested to not (even though I considered it).
Yet, apparently, some people were thinking ‘oh, dragons fighting and killing each other? That’s going to be EPIC!’ and then, upon watching, are more of the opinion ‘Actually, this is awful’. You’re damn right it’s awful.
It turns out, a lot of us were very not okay after episode four aired.
Dude…
Nope.
What, are you surprised you have a heart?
You see, even before the season one finale, I knew I was going to get upset – having still retained the trauma from dragons getting hurt and killed in Game of Thrones, I already know exactly how I feel about it.
a) Because I can’t stand watching, reading or hearing about any animals suffering or getting killed these days, and;
b) Because I’m a reptile lover, and Stepmother of my own dragons (actually lizards), so maybe I find these scenes with the dragons particularly tough, iono.
I know it’s called The Dance of the Dragons but I can’t stand watching the dragons dance

Season two, episode four was when it all properly kicked off again with the Dance of the Dragons. Vhagar – who had previously bitten the young male dragon, Arrax, in two whilst Lucerys was riding him – upon taking orders from her rider, Aemond, engaged in battle with two more younger dragons.
Not that it’s really said in the show, but those dragons were Vhagar’s own grandchildren. There are deadly consequences, and Rhaenys, a beloved character, and her beautiful dragon, Meleys, take the fall. I was broken by this episode.
There’s also a lot to be said about the connection between the dragons and their humans, and that also pulls on the heartstrings BIG TIME.
This scene with Aegon and Sunfyre goddamn near breaks my heart, because lookit ’em! They’re so happy. Sunfyre is perhaps the one being in the whole world who loves Aegon the way she does.
Also, when she landed, even though she was injured and it would have hurt terribly, she turns to protect Aegon from the impact.
I don’t know the story of what happens next, including how the show may differ to the books (which I also haven’t read) so there’s no more spoilers coming in this post, but I just want to let off some steam at this point, really, whilst mentally preparing myself for episode five.
So, if you feel upset at watching cgi dragons getting hurt and killed, but also don’t want to stop watching Big Dragon House, know that I feel you. I’m right there with you.
And if you’re mocking your friends for getting upset at cgi dragons getting hurt and killed on Big Dragon House, for shame on you – and also a pox!
Because no matter how much I try and tell myself ‘they’re only cgi dragons, it’s not real’ I can only steel myself so much for what happens to those dragons. I think part of it is down to good storytelling, and letting yourself be invested – which is all about giving yourself up to the show.
But just remember, this show is not going to end well for anybody. But, y’know what really helps? Memes.
What do you think of House of the Dragon season two so far? Can you relate to the heartache, or are you wondering why people are getting so upset at dragon deaths?
