There’s an adult twist, and it’s never quite clear to me why there’s a monster chase, but Ghost’s Mary on a Cross animated video is loaded with Scooby Doo vibes.
Actually, the chase is quite sinister.
The original Scooby-Doo, “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!“, utilized a style known as limited animation. This technique, common in 1960s television animation, prioritized efficiency by minimizing the number of unique drawings required for each scene. You’ll see that technique used to retro effect here.
The music video, released today, heralds the arrival of Rite Here Rite Now, the concert film about Ghost, which debuts at midnight.
The film Rite Here Rite Now intertwines Ghost’s concert footage with a fictional narrative delving into the band’s lore. Frontman Tobias Forge has embodied various personas throughout their career, portraying popes who lead a Satanic ministry. In the film, set during the Impera era, Forge appears as Papa Emeritus IV, who frequently visits backstage to interact with Sister Imperator (his associate) and the spirit of Papa Nihil (revealed to be his father). After the concert, Sister Imperator dies, and Papa Emeritus IV ascends to the position of Frater Imperator, now overseeing the ministry and anticipating a new papal heir.
