The first time we saw a trailer for The Wild Robot, it completely blew us away, and now Universal Pictures has released this fantastic behind-the-scenes featurette for the upcoming DreamWorks Animation picture, giving us some great insight into what’s gone into making the film.
Spoilers; it’s a lot. It really seems like everyone involved in making The Wild Robot gave it their all, and the result is what looks like a beautifully animated, heartfelt and moving film that we’re so frickin’ excited to watch here at Geek Native.
The film “follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, ‘Roz’ for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.”
It’s a story all about “the discovery of self, a thrilling examination of the bridge between technology and nature and a moving exploration of what it means to be alive and connected to all living things.”
The Wild Robot is written and helmed by Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Lilo & Stitch). What sets this film apart is Sanders’ inspiration from stories such as Bambi, using more illustrative backgrounds and character designs – which you see a lot less these days.
The result seems like they’ve really pushed the needle with this film, with so much work going into each detailed frame – it looks absolutely breathtaking, and I found it so interesting hearing from the team behind the animation talking about their processes to create such amazing effects.
Trust me, this is well worth over just over three and-a-half minutes of your time.

The Wild Robot will be released in cinemas on 20th September, and for us, that can’t come soon enough.
