The minor monsters your RPG heroes encounter generally aren’t very wise.
Tabletop Trifles embraces that and spins it around. In Mooks & Minions, the PCs are these crazy creatures.
The game plays fast, chaotic, and messy. The system uses exploding D6, and the dice even determine movement. When our minor monster PCs interact with threats, unlike with heroes, the situation can get worse.
Sound curious? Mooks & Minions is currently available as a beta playtest which means they’re currently free.
PCs have five skills that can score up to ten; each point a character has in the skill is a die for the d6 pool. The skills are;
- Bash
- Dash
- Fix
- Trick
- Utility
The game also uses a Doom Clock, and the rules for that are in the 30-page download.
Monsters have an innate sense of impending doom and can feel it inching closer as they become more reckless and stressed. They call this force the ‘Doom Clock’. Mechanically, the Doom Clock is an additional randomised obstacle that adds to the uncertainty and chaos.
There are two ways that the Doom Clock can increase:
- The Doom Clock can increase based on objectives/story elements in the game by a set amount.
- The Doom Clock increases for every requested “Reckless” by one dice rolled divided by 2 and rounded up. This can be done once per turn.
However, it can be decreased:
- You can decrease the doom clock by 2 by taking the “Selfless” action when a Threat is not present.
The playtest download also contains character sheets and printable material as well as the one-off adventure “A Tasty Treasure” .
One of the notes in the game, one I like, is that such chaos does require trust between the GM and players and players and the GM.
