You don’t have to be in a couple to wear couple’s costumes —you just have to be two people who happen to be dressed as characters in the same fictional universe. And at the SDCC, sometimes that means just running into someone with a cosplay that matches yours.
Regardless of their relationship status, these couples we photographed last weekend all look incredible together.
The Mythological Mandalorian
Mandalorians have all types of weapons and armor, so nothing is stopping them from taking inspiration from the Greek Goddess Athena and a Scottish king. You’d better think twice before you challenge this badass couple.
Hazbin Pre-Teens
I’m fairly sure this young “couple” was actually a brother and sister. Regardless of their relationship, these all-too-adorable twelve-year-olds clearly love Hazbin Hotel and were all-in with their impressive Alastor and Rosie cosplays.
Double Deadpool
With Deadpool Vs. Wolverine released the same weekend as the convention, there seemed to be a near-infinite supply of Deadpools. Case in point, these two weren’t even a couple but just ran into each other outside and were wrangled into taking pictures together.
While you can’t tell from the picture, Deadpool’s head was an incredible prop that even closed its eyes and talked. Want your own? These are actually available on Amazon, but be warned —they’re pricey!
Everyone Loves Deadpool
You wouldn’t believe where Deadpool popped up at the convention —even Shin Hati ended up hanging out with a Jedi Deadpool. I hate to think of the chaos these two could invoke on the universe.
The Best Barbie Dolls
Ever since the Barbie movie was released last year, you can’t escape Barbies and Kens in skates, cowboy hats, and cardboard boxes, but this couple was one of the best, with two of the best Ken and Barbie looks from the film.
If you’re curious, Mattel actually released an official Weird Barbie, but it seems way more in line with the character to just weird up your own. On the other hand, while they did release a Ken based on Ryan Gosling’s fur-coat look, the one in this cosplay is still something you’d have to make yourself.
Thumbs Up to Dressing Up
While most vault dwellers look more or less the same in their generic blue jumpsuits (and there were a lot of them this year), this couple must have been in one of Vault Tec’s more fashion-friendly vaults as they were all decked out in a full-length dress and embellished jacket.
How to Train Your Dad to Cosplay With You
Hiccup’s dad, Stoick the Vast, is sadly underrepresented in the cosplay scene. Fortunately, this man with his gloriously overly-thick beard was there to take on the mantle. He and Astrid looked incredibly hot in the warm San Diego weather, and by that I mean they were probably beyond sweaty.
Avoid the Library
While the Vashta Nerada is certainly a memorable Doctor Who villain, you rarely see anyone cosplaying as the ghostly astronauts trapped in the Library. Both the charming TARDIS suit and the creepy Vashta Nerada were some of the most original Whovian cosplays at the con.
Tarantino Girls
Some girls bond with their mothers over princess movies. These two celebrated their love of bloody, violent Tarantino movies instead, and they were having a great time… hopefully without any adrenaline injections.
Eyes on the Elden Ring
You don’t need to see their eyes to know this couple is on the same page with their love of the Elden Ring. As you can imagine though, they didn’t walk around the con like with their hats/helmets on, or they’d be tripping over everything —it’s almost like it’s easier to navigate the world as a video game character.
Boldly Dressing Like No One Has Dressed Before
There’s a whole meme of people dressing up in Starfleet uniforms to visit Renaissance faires. But let’s be honest, if members of Starfleet really visited the past, they would always follow the Prime Directive to ensure they didn’t interfere with history as much as possible. Outfits like this seem like the perfect cover.
Remember, you don’t have to be an amazing cosplayer to have a great couple’s cosplay. This dress is from Her Universe, and while I don’t know where his shirt is from, it does seem to be a commercially sold design.
Something Alien Here
Then again, it would be pretty hard for an Andorian to blend in, so I guess if she was on an away team with someone, they may as well just wear their typical uniform. These two may have stood out from the crowd, but it was in the best possible way.
One-derful Piece
These two both look on point in their One Piece costumes, but while Boa Hancock is stunning in her pose and clothes, Donquixote Doflamingo looks fabulous with his pink feather coat and seriously stylin’ glasses.
If you’re like me and think these glasses would be cool to wear in everyday life, you can find them here.
Schweetz Dreams
It’s rare for Wreck-It Ralph cosplayers to look like Ralph because he’s just so giant, but this guy pulls it off even without the red hair. He and Vanellope Von Schweetz looked like they may have been on a bit of a sugar-fueled shopping rush —which is hard not to do on the con floor.
No Clone Costumes Here
Dutchess Satine is so rarely cosplayed, and it’s really a tragedy when her clothing is so beautiful in live-action. She and Obi-Wan look as great together in real life as they do in cartoons.
Genshin Impact Made Real
It’s always something special when you see a cosplayer that looks like they’ve fallen right off the screen —and these two looked absolutely too perfect.
Legend of Zelda: Con Waker
Speaking of screen-ready costumes, this Zelda and Link looked almost too perfect —all the way down to Link’s shoes and her dress embellishments.
