In a perhaps unwise move, The Crow director Rupert Sanders has spoken out about the backlash his film is receiving from audiences and critics alike.
In a surprise to nobody but seemingly Sanders himself, The Crow is utterly bombing at the box office, taking in just $4.6 million in its opening weekend.
Well, let’s hear what he has to say.
I think a lot of people are very active online and not so active in life. Get out and do something and have less time throwing stones.
I think it would be great just for people to know that this is a reimagining and wildly different from the original and that the original’s still there. I haven’t recorded over anyone’s VHS.
You can still go and see that movie, and I hope this movie resonates with people who loved that movie when they were in their teens. This is my version of that text. It was my adaptation of James’s graphic novel, which I loved.
Hmmm. I’d heard about Sanders’ “vision” when posting about The Crow at the time, and my thoughts were skeptical back then.
What did I say again? Oh yeah, I referenced the fact that Sanders claimed he was inspired not by the comics, or the original Brandon Lee movie, but instead by the likes of Post Malone and Lil Peep – as well as his OWN LIFE.
Let’s be real, I’d been increasingly s*** talking the movie as more and more details were released, and I’m just going to come out and say it… I wasn’t wrong.
And I’ll have you know I’m a busy woman. I’ve just spent the entire month of August out reviewing the Edinburgh Fringe, as well as prepping my artwork for an art exhibition I set up at the weekend. So, I’ve got a lot going on, but I still found time to whinge about this film AND WITH GOOD REASON.
Sanders should at least read the room, agree to take the hit and sodding well learn from it, so that next time he can do better. So much better.
And speaking of Fringe, I’m going to finish this blog post by quoting John Robertson of The Dark Room fame, and saying: “Shut up you tiny fool.”
What do you think of Sanders’ response to The Crow backlash? Can you see where he’s coming from? Do you feel sorry for him? Join the conversation in the comments.
