LionWing Publishing specialises in finding tabletop RPGs in Japan, localising them and bringing them to the Western market. As you can imagine, Kickstarter plays a big part, and their 10th project is Kedamono Opera.
In Kedamono Opera, players are soul-eating beasts who might appear as humans at times. They could help people but have a hunger to eat human meat. The Kickstarter is live until September 6th.
There’s a free and Google Drive hosted sample of Kedamono Opera available now. It’s a chunky 23 pages.
Kedamono Opera is a storytelling game focused on powerful, ageless creatures known as kedamono, who prey on human souls and possess supernatural powers.
Players work together to create a story guided by “portents,” short phrases that must be incorporated into the narrative, offering flexibility for creative storytelling. As kedamono face challenges, they can use their supernatural abilities to improve their chances of success.
A monstrous wolf drives off lesser beasts from a young woman lost in the woods. Though the wolf claims it’s to eat her himself, the loneliness in his heart keeps his fangs at bay, at least for a time.
Backers at $25 get the digital edition and stretch goals, and these backers will get their copies before the physical books go out. LionWing estimates this will be in January.
At $45, backers unlock the physical copy of Kedamono Opera and the digital. The delivery date is slated for May.
There’s also a collector’s edition of Kedamono Opera, which unlocks at $99. It is a leatherette, foil-stamped hardcover that comes with a gold ribbon marker, gold endpapers, full-colour chapter title pages, and translation notes.
