It has been an age since I last blogged about a TV/video ad, and that’s not just because I rarely watch TV these days. It feels like it’s been a long while since we had a good geeky ad.
In the UK Deliveroo has released this evil GM ad to highlight the perks of being a subscriber to the food delivery service.
Deliveroo doesn’t call this the “Evil GM” ad, but I do. It could also apply to MMO or other computer RPG gamers, especially with the virtual screen seen early in the ad. I like it because it’s much better than the usual cliche of two bros sitting on the sofa playing some sports game together.
We have a master villain in a dramatic cape, with an admirable home set up, who is enjoying a hearty mwahahaha laugh and getting on with life. As he does so, his Deliveroo deliveries arrive.
It’s a memorable ad, clearly Deliveroo, with a humorous twist at the end. The ad guy gene in me approves.
As funny and clever as the food delivery ad is, it’s still an ad, so let’s point out Deliveroo alternatives in the interest of fairness. In the UK, there’s Just Eat, Uber Eats, FoodHub, and Food Panda, and increasingly, supermarkets and stores like Tesco with Whoosh, Sainsbury’s, and Ocado have their own same-day food service. If you can tolerate it, then the old-school Pizza Hut-style deliveries are still a thing, too, and their pizza rivals.
