Alex Avilés of Epic Pride Gaming combines fantasy and horror with action and pride. This week, they published the Once Upon the Dead quickstart.
Take “Once Upon a Time” and mash it up with something like “Walking Dead,” and you get “Once Upon the Dead.” The tabletop RPG is set in the world of Mythia, a fantasy of myths and folklore and the survival horror of a zombie apocalypse.
A decade has past since the undead menace befell the lands in the event known as the Flood. This cataclysm devastated the flourishing realms of Mythia, transforming brave heroes into twisted undead creatures that now infest the ravaged lands. The once-plentiful towns and vibrant cities have become shadows of their former selves, abandoned and desolate with only the truly courageous daring to venture within their borders.
The TTRPG will use Free League’s Year Zero Engine, and the quickstart is generous at 54 pages. It’s free to download.
In the game, characters are part of a caravan of travellers, a community that supports (or does not) each other and tackles the challenges and dangers of the road.
While the day-to-day challenges in Mythia are significant, there’s also an epic backdrop of a battle of hope versus gloom, Rhomantis versus Ghrem. The forces of good and love, the Rhomantis, guide survivors through the horrors while attacked by the evil plague, trying to reshape the world even further.
