During Geek Native‘s time at Tabletop Scotland this weekend, I had the pleasure of running into female-led zine company Never Mind the Dice Rolls, where I learned all about the TTRPG zines they create – and happily accepted a couple of samples!
The most interesting takeaway from our chat was that they’d developed a short two-page scenario SPECIFICALLY for Tabletop Scotland 2024! How cool is that?! The game is called Haggis 11, and it’s a short scenario for the Roll for Shoes Micro TTRPG system by Ben Wray.
Written by co-founder Kat Simmons-Smith, it’s described as a chaotic, fun game that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it’s also probably the only game I’ve ever heard of where you yourself get to play a haggis as your character.
I had a quick chat with Andrew from Never Mind the Dice Rolls, who happened to be manning the stall at the time, who told me (with a smile on his face):
Haggis 11 is a game we wrote specifically for the convention. It might be a bit racist if you’re Scottish, but not intentionally!
I thought this was a pretty funny quote, and later became more appropriate considering Girdy and myself’s cultural appropriation debate experience at the Fantasy & Folklore seminar! Thanks for the warning, Andrew, but as a scot myself, I confirm there’s nothing too offensive in there.
S’all good, despite the clearly very obviously fictional lore about where Scots originally got the idea for their tartan!
I can also confirm, this sounds like a very silly, charming little game, and you can pick up yours via DriveThruRPG right now!
What do you think – will you give Haggis 11 a try, or are you just stoked to discover a zine all about TTRPGs? Comment your thoughts below!
