Animated by Gabe Hordos‘ Old Knight is an adventure story of the worst start to retirement ever. Or the best.
Jay Preston voices both the king and the old knight, and if you think that’s impressive, then Dee Baker does the horse and dragon.
Despite the fantasy story, serious issues are touched on here, particularly age discrimination. Unlike overt discrimination, age bias is often subtle and unconscious, making it harder to identify and combat. This can manifest as assumptions about an older worker’s tech skills, adaptability, or energy levels, leading to missed opportunities for training, promotions, or even hiring.
The rise of the gig economy and contract work can disadvantage older workers, who may be perceived as less flexible or less willing to take on short-term projects. On the other hand, the gig economy is a hydra of a beast, with some fans loving the flex as much as others hate it with a passion.
While age discrimination is illegal in many countries, there’s often a lack of awareness among both employers and employees about their rights and responsibilities, leading to underreporting and inadequate enforcement. Additionally, as people live longer and retirement ages increase, older workers are staying in the workforce longer. This increases the potential for age discrimination and highlights the need for age-inclusive workplaces.
Meanwhile, those dragons are just terrorising our horses.
