Spencer Campbell is known for adapting ideas and vibes from computer games to tabletop RPGs. It’s been a rocky road at times, but Gila RPG now has a proven track record and many fans.
The latest project is LOOT, which uses a hexcrawl grid with a west marshes approach and a cRPG looter shooter vibe. The campaign is live, hundreds of backers are in, and the target has been met. You can follow the progress on the pitch page.
LOOT will use LUMEN 2.0, a system from Spencer that does not use dice. LUMEN covers both quick tactical combat and world exploration.
We’re told that LOOT best suits two to five players and a GM. Each character is a founder of a new city created when a popular uprising got rid of an undead overlord and tore down the previous city.
Instead of relying on traditional skill checks and dice rolls, characters utilize three core Approaches: Force, Flow, and Focus.
These Approaches serve as resources that players strategically expend to overcome obstacles. Players can face any challenge head-on as long as they have the points.
However, the quest takes its toll. As characters tire, complications arise, demanding clever solutions and adaptability.
There’s a free-to-download quick start on Itch.io already, which can help players and prospective backers get their heads around the concept.
When a fight breaks out, you use a 6×6 grid to represent the adventurers and the various enemies and monsters they’ll face. On their turn, adventurers use their weapons and magic items to power themselves up and take out their foes.
Backers get into the action for just $1 as a retailer or someone wanting updates. The digital copy of LOOT unlocks as a reward at the $10 tier.
The printed copy of the game, which comes with the PDF, is the reward at the $30 tier.
After that, the Kickstarter campaign picks up the heat, and a $100 tier lets backers work with Spencer to create a faction and some loot.
The estimated delivery of the PDF is December of this year, and the physical book will follow swiftly after that in January 2025. Gila RPGs are running the Kickstarter campaign until October 8th.
