Atlas Games, publisher of the renowned tabletop roleplaying game Ars Magica, has announced the successful funding of its Open License initiative. The result may be a new Spanish publisher called Blagdaross.
Launched via BackerKit, the crowdfunding campaign garnered significant support from fans, enabling the company to release the game’s core mechanics and Mythic Europe setting under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license.
This development allows fans and creators to freely utilize and adapt the Ars Magica system and setting in their own projects, fostering a new era of creativity and collaboration within the game’s community. Details about the open license can be found on the Atlas Games website.
The Spanish-language sourcebook “Finis Terrae: El Tribunal de Iberia” will also be released under the CC-BY-SA 4.0 Open License.
Spanish publisher Holocubierta Ediciones can do this and will do so due to the Open License.
“Finis Terrae,” a 340-page full-colour book detailing the Mythic Spain and Portugal setting for Ars Magica, is the first major third-party title to be released under this license. An English translation will follow, also CC-BY-SA 4.0. and Atlas Games are in talks to buy the rights to the art featured in the original.
Holocubierta Ediciones is getting out of publishing. The two authors of Finis Terrae, Mario Donaire and Óscar Estefanía, will now found a new publishing company called Blagdaross, dedicated to Ars Magica Open License releases.
Atlas Games co-owner John Nephew told the press;
They will be doing exactly what we intended the license to make possible. We’re excited to see how Blagdaross and other creators leverage the Open License to expand the Ars Magica universe for players worldwide.”
Ismael de Felipe, co-owner of Holocubierta Ediciones, added;
To see Finis Terrae published by Atlas Games, and Ars Magica in such good hands as Mario and Oscar’s, is a perfect way to say goodbye,” says de Felipe. “Their pioneering work with the Open License makes this moment even more significant. We couldn’t be happier or prouder.”
