I’m reminded that I’ve not watered the plants for a while, and yet here I am blogging about the short horror “Boogey Man” from Alter.
During a one-night stand, Josh thoughtlessly hides his booger in a neglected houseplant. Overnight, the plant undergoes a bizarre transformation and seeks revenge on the unsuspecting couple.
Valentin Lang directed, co-wrote and co-produced. The cast, not counting the plants, are Joshua Shediak, Libby Kay and Shannon Ryan.

Horror movies featuring plants
Ah, the leafy terrors of cinema! I’ve had a think and here are some famous horror movies where plants play a starring – and often sinister – role:
- Little Shop of Horrors (1986): This musical dark comedy features Audrey II, a bloodthirsty, talking plant with a taste for human flesh. It’s a classic with iconic songs and puppetry.
- The Day of the Triffids (1962): A sci-fi horror where carnivorous plants, the Triffids, take over the world after most of humanity is blinded by a meteor shower.
- Swamp Thing (1982): This Wes Craven film features a scientist transformed into a monstrous plant creature, Swamp Thing, who fights to protect the swamp from those who would exploit it.
- The Happening (2008): While critically panned, this M. Night Shyamalan film explores a mysterious phenomenon where plants release a neurotoxin that causes humans to commit suicide.
- Annihilation (2018): This sci-fi horror features a mysterious, shimmering zone called “The Shimmer”, where plant life has mutated and evolved in strange and dangerous ways.
- The Ruins (2008): A group of friends on vacation in Mexico become trapped in ancient Mayan ruins where carnivorous vines stalk them.
My recommendation? Definitely Little Shop of Horrors.
