The first trailer for live-action anime/manga adaptation Cells at Work has just dropped from Warner Bros, and it looks completely off the chain.
Created by Akane Shimizu, the story is known for bringing “the inner workings of the human body to life by personifying cells, quickly captured the hearts of readers and became a sensation.”
Directed by Hideki Takeuchi from a script written by Yûichi Tokunaga, Cells at Work looks like a very entertaining, silly, and visually interesting movie full of bright colours and characters.
According to the official synopsis:
The smallest protagonist in cinema history – a human cell! There are a staggering 37 trillion cells in the human body. Red blood cells that carry oxygen, white blood cells that fight bacteria, and countless other cells work tirelessly day and night to protect your health and life.
High school student Niko (Mana Ashida) lives with her father, Shigeru (Sadao Abe). Because of Niko’s diligent nature and her healthy lifestyle, the cells inside her body are always working joyfully. Meanwhile, inside Shigeru’s body, the cells are always complaining, exhausted from the brutal working environment, as he leads an irregular & unhealthy life.
On the outside they may look like a happy father & daughter, but on the inside their bodily environments couldn’t be more different. As their lively days go on, pathogens start to sneak up into their bodies… The most epic battle in the history of human cells, with the future of Niko & Shigeru at stake, is about to begin!

Cells at Work is said to be “A truly original visual feast that must be experienced on the big screen. This winter, embark on a breathtaking journey inside your own body.”
And Cells at Work! will be released by Warner Bros Japan in Japanese cinemas on 13th December. We don’t know about the rest of the world yet, but I can certainly see this being sought after.
