The auction will feature props and models used in the creation of iconic films like “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963) and “Clash of the Titans” (1981). Notable lots include a Kali lighting stand-in model from “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad” (1973), estimated to fetch between £100,000 and £200,000, and a Hydra head and neck from “Jason and the Argonauts,” estimated at £25,000 to £50,000. This auction provides a unique chance to acquire pieces of Harryhausen’s legacy and celebrate his contributions to filmmaking.
There’s no doubt in this blogger’s mind that Ray was a pioneer and a treasured talent.
Speaking about The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Harryhausen said,
“I have to confess that when faced with the animation for such a complex sequence, I would wonder why I made life so difficult for myself. It was wonderful to dream and plan such effects, but how would I make them all work? Whatever doubts I had about this sequence, today I am extremely proud of it. Everything seemed to come together. The stunts were all first-rate, and the action flows at a cracking pace.”
Propstore, founded in 1998 by Stephen Lane, emerged from a passion for film and a desire to connect collectors with iconic props and costumes. Lane recognized the potential for film memorabilia to be appreciated as a form of pop-culture art, leading him to establish Propstore as a resource for collectors and a champion of archival standards in this burgeoning field.
By providing access to coveted pieces and promoting responsible collecting practices, Propstore has helped elevate film memorabilia to the status of “prop art.” This approach bridges the gap between entertainment memorabilia and fine art, recognizing these objects’ artistic value and cultural significance.
