Last week, Bronwen took a look at The Glove from Dusk Wave Arts.
I think The Glove is remarkable, one of the heroes in Dusk Wave Arts’ 10-year history, and I’m especially pleased and interested in the audio companion. That helps with accessibility and bringing the comic book to life.
That 10th-anniversary showcase post from Bronwen also mentioned Forged of Fate. That’s a prequel for which CEO Paul Graham told us we’ll be there to learn more about Tim’s mother and autism.
Forged of Fate preview
Today, we can do better than tease! We’re fortunate to have several pieces of concept art with permission to share. I’ve even read the script for issue one. As you’d expect, I can’t share that, but I can tease extra some juicy bits!
Here’s how panel 1 opens!
WIDE. A dense, old-growth forest. Scattered around the forest floor are numerous war tents, lingering field maids, and wavering campfires. In a small clearing at the center is a larger, ornate tent rimmed with copper and topped by a shiny Gilded Army fixture at the tent’s crest. Two guards clad in leather, copper, and painted streaks of cobalt stand out front.
The action starts with a soldier going to see some creepy seers and then swiftly moves to the opening moments of a pretentious battle. We’ve character portraits of some of the main players.
We can also show you what a typical member of the Gilded Army looks like. I particularly note how the armour design safely invokes high fantasy while remaining practical. I can imagine people fighting while dressed like this.
In another extract from the script, we can see that the armour design is no fluke.
WIDE. HIGH ANGLE. The battlefield has formed. At the foot of the temple, thousands of Rebulus’s archers gather on the stone steps of Belkor Keep. The archers dawn a darker leather light-armour. Like clay tiles on a roof, their armour shelves on their shoulders, eclipsing the section below to cover their shoulders and unobstructed shoulder movement.
The same attention to detail is evident in Forged of Fate’s environmental and art design. The seers’ tent, which we see below, feels exactly where fantasy—with that mystic circle in the centre—meets reality, with the foodstuff storage area in the shadows.
The same goes for this teasing sketch of a throne room… and what a confident figure on the throne!
What next?
We have been given 11th December as the release date for Forged of Fate, and Dusk Wave Arts are active on Instagram and great at posting updates and teasers.
A project to watch is the newly launched Barheim, which is a drink-themed tower defence all about resource management and coordination. I think Barheim shows DWA’s breadth and why we can expect Forged of Fate to be worth waiting for.
