Paul Scott Canavan, an artistic and art director for Magic: The Gathering, has brought a horror TTRPG to Kickstarter. It’s funded and will run until November 30th.
The pitch video for Pale Tides certainly looks and sounds scary. What’s more, Paul, like Geek Native, is Edinburgh-based. You can view progress on Kickstarter.
On offer is a TTRPG suitable for newcomers and veterans and a beautifully illustrated book (no AI).
Pale Tides will use a 5-suit tarot deck and dice, and the rues include streamlined chargen so you can have a character in minutes.
The Pale Tides setting is dark, player characters must defend nature from ancient horrors, and the game uses a Rogue-like campaign structure.
Set against the backdrop of a dark fantasy world steeped in folklore and wild magic, players take on the role of Hexen, an ancient cadre of witches dedicated to protecting the land and its people from earthly oppressors and otherworldly entities.
Backers can support the indie project by sharing it on social media, and those who pledge £1 get access to the pledge manager.
At £20, supporters get two high-res PDFs, the Pale Tides core rules and the Deck of Tides, to print out their own tarot.
The core box set unlocks as a reward at £70. At this tier backers get the hardcover and digital Pale Tides and Deck of Tides, black dice and in a custom box.
At £150, backers are upgraded to the Deluxe Box Set, which swaps in the faux-leather deluxe cover rule book and offers a deluxe box and Pale Tides prints.
There’s even a £666 tier for original art and a £2,000 one, which is very limited, for Pale Tides paintings from the artist.
The project, except for some of the custom art, is expected to ship next October.
