Forteller Games is known for audio supplements for games like Gloomhaven but has now branched into creating their own TTRPGs.
Their new game, Sunset, now has a free quickstart. However, it does come with a trigger warning.
Sunset allows players to deal with, process, and introspect on life and death. As such, this game deals with death, suicide, violent crimes, real-world abhorrent acts, and the human psyche. Play with understanding and care with your fellow players. That said, you can substitute aspects that your table is uncomfortable with.
Sunset utilises a unique rules-lite system and the Deck of Many Dice to create a narrative experience centred around mortality and hope. Players take on the roles of Threads, individuals confronting their impending deaths. Through gameplay, they explore fragmented memories and unravel deceptions to earn a chance to bargain with Death for more time.
The game embraces a hope punk theme, emphasizing resilience and optimism in the face of overwhelming challenges. This creates a counter-narrative to pessimism, encouraging players to find meaning and hope even in the darkest of circumstances.
The free quickstart includes;
- Over 60 free pages for the Death Master (with a special section for you) or with your fellow Threads.
- Five printable pre-gens (though you can make your characters as you wish through Character Creation).
- Form-fillable blank character sheet.
- A bookmarked table of contents and checked for screen readers to make reading accessible.
- Glossary, introduction, and game tools.
- A one-shot adventure that delves into the horrors of modern life.
- Rules for one to five players, not including the Death Master.
Various sourcebooks, supplemental materials, and additional resources will be available later if things go according to Forteller Games‘s plans. Those plans include a Kickstarter in early 2025.
