Here at Geek Native we were lucky enough to get our hands on a free review copy of How Am I Weird? – from How Am I Weird? Games – and loved every second of it! (Having already reviewed their other title, Anger Smash, earlier this week)
Let’s just say, I’m all for weirdness, and I got quite excited when I first saw the title of this game, because it sounded right up my street. Dear Reader, what I discovered next was one of the best game descriptions I’ve ever read, and I was 100% sold (on taking a review sample).
The official description reads:
Don’t play this if you are normal – Bring out your inner weirdo by playing our card games! How Am I Weird has all the wild, weird and wacky humour without the profanity! HOW AM I WEIRD is as versatile as your imagination allows!
- It’s suitable for a family/work environment. You can play with your dear Aunt Marjorie – as long as she’s not too sensitive about vomit, witchcraft or assassins.
- It boosts your creativity by embracing the absurd. Don’t take yourselves too seriously as adults!
So if you like chicken dancing, sleeping in a curtain, licking your laptop screen, or even dating your dog, don’t be ashamed. WHO WANTS TO BE NORMAL?!
BEING WEIRD IS EMPOWERING. BEING WEIRD IS WHAT MAKES US HUMAN. BEING WEIRD IS FUN!
Reading the rules/getting set up
Myself, Girdy and two friends got set up at Ancient Robot Games, off Leith Walk in Edinburgh, for what was sure to be a fun session. From reading the rules early on, it was clear that not only was this game a sillier take on Cards Against Humanity, it was also a FAMILY-FRIENDLY version.
Well… family friendly as long as you don’t make up your own, absolutely vile responses. Then that’s completely on you (you filthy sods). The game comes with 500 very silly cards, and we go round the table on each turn, with one person overturning a card and getting a scenario they then have to read out to the rest of the group.
Then everyone has to pick their weirdest response (or make one up). It’s a fairly simple concept, and one that we didn’t have to spend too long pondering over. This meant straight into the fun!
Playing How Am I Weird?
This game quickly had us in great bouts of laughter, and I found myself choosing the funniest responses that were just so off beat and unexpected – and hearing everyone else’s responses had us all giggling.
I really needed a laugh, and How Am I Weird? has definitely been one of the funniest games I’ve played in quite a long time.
In fact, we had so much fun that I don’t think any of us really cared about who won in the end (it was Betsy, by the way).
It’s fairly open-ended, too. You just play until you decide to call it quits, and see who has the most wins at the end.
This meant we basically played How Am I Weird? until the end of our Ancient Robot games booked session, and left on a high.
Overall
I’d say How Am I Weird? seems like a fantastic party choice, and one you can play with work colleagues or family members WITHOUT having the danger of shaming yourself so badly you can never face them again (à la Cards Against Humanity).
The rules are super simple to follow, and if you’re a fan of the format of CAH, and already a weirdo, you’ll probably be a big fan of How Am I Weird?. So, go on, embrace your inner weirdo!
You can get your copy of How Am I Weird? from Amazon for just £20.99 – and I predict it being a big Christmas hit!
Have you played How Am I Weird? yet – and how did you find it? Let me know in the comments!
