Cryptozoic Entertainment has crowdfunded a 40th-anniversary reissue of the DC Heroes Role-Playing Game.
In the original 1985 game, characters could be Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and other iconic heroes to take on the likes of Brainiac, Lex, The Joker and Sinestro. The Kickstarter runs until December 18th; you can join in or read more.
The new Kickstarter offers an impressive collection of outputs;
- 1st edition box
- 2nd edition box
- Dozens of sourcebooks, modules and references
- Some slipcases
- Premium dice
- Premium GM screen
DC Heroes use a system wherein an Acting Value (AV) and Effective Value (EV) are measured against an Opposing Value (OV) and Resistance Value (RV).
The AV score measures how likely a character is to succeed and EV the impact of success. For example, melee skill and damage.
The OV is the difficulty faced, such as an opponent’s dodge, and the RV a success reduction, such as armour.
DC Heroes introduced the idea of Attribute Points where each increment was effectively twice as good as the one before. Batman has intelligence 12, making him twice as smart as an NPC with intelligence 11. Superman has strength 25 and, therefore, eight million times stronger than the average person. The scale allowed human characters to coexist on the same game engine as Darkseid.
The first reward tier is $60 and that unlocks either the 1st or 2nd edition core DC Heroes Role-Playing Game rules box. Shipping for the 13 ib item (the packaging weight) must also be paid.
It’s a leap up to the next as at $135, the packaging weight becomes 19 lb, and a bundle of the backer’s choice is added with stretch goals for it.
31 lbs and $280 comes next which gives backers three rather than one bundle and still only one core box of choice.
We’re getting into workout territory next as $630 unlocks 75 lbs for the courier to carry and for backers to pay shipping on. This tier gets both core boxes, all seven bundles and stretch goals.
It goes higher and heavier! 81 lbs freight weight, $695, adds dice, dice tray, bookmarks and GM screen.
At the very top, but only for retailers, is 231 for multiple copies of the DC Heroes Role-Playing Game and $1,200 pledged.
Cryptozoic Entertainment estimates an October 2025 delivery.
