Oh my goth. An unsettling trailer for black and white Danish post-WWI gothic thriller has dropped from Mubi, and watching it is delivering chills in all the right places (is that a thing?).
Yes, darklings, I’m back after one of the most stressful weeks since taking a step or five back from agency life and becoming a free-painting art student, and I’ve brought with me A TRAILER. Quell surprise.
The Girl with the Needle tells the story of Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne) “a young factory worker, struggling to survive in post WWI in Copenhagen. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), a charismatic woman running an underground adoption agency, helping mothers to find foster homes for their unwanted children.
“With nowhere else to turn, Karoline takes on the role of a wet-nurse. A strong connection is formed between the two women, but Karoline’s world shatters when she stumbles upon the shocking truth behind her work.”
It’s the mask that’s getting a lot of my attention in this one; it’s very much giving me Richard Harrow from Boardwalk Empire vibes, only I suspect the disfigurement underneath is a lot worse.
Check out the trailer below:
Directed by Magnus von Horn, and inspired by a true story, The Girl with the Needle also stars Trine Dyrholm, with Besir Zeciri, Ava Knox Martin, and Joachim Fjelstrup.
And you’ll be able to watch The Girl with the Needle when it’s released in UK cinemas on 10th January 2025 – or, 6th December if you’re in the US.
