The first trailer for Superman was released by DC Studios today, and not only has everyone been talking about it, the internet’s also been filled with various tidbits of news! So, I decided to make this Superman Superblog about it – don’t worry, we’ll get you up to speed.
Firstly, I’ve got to admit; it’s an exciting trailer, and it looks like it’s going to be a fantastic movie – full of colour and with star David Corenswet looking perfect for the part. The vibes we’re getting are immaculate!
Director James Gunn has said he really wanted to “capture the essence” of the film with this first trailer, which means this has all the great signs of being a fantoosh watch!
I think I wanted the trailer to really get the essence of the film. You know, the film is optimistic, yet not without its darker moments. It’s a big science fiction movie, but at the same time, incredibly grounded in the way we treat the characters and everything else.
So I wanted it to be something that was the essence of Superman, that was the Superman that I grew up with, that I love, but also something new at the same time.
What’s it about, then?
Before I tell you anything else, here’s the official description:
Follows the titular superhero to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned. It’s set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we’ll see how it affected this world’s history and has shaped the DCU.
The trailer itself
Right, so before we get into anything else, let’s watch the trailer:
The cast
Also starring in Superman, we have Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore as Otis.
James Gunn was ‘miserable’ shooting Superman
Gunn recently spoke to io9, admitting that on the set of the movie the pressure of rebooting the iconic Superman made things… really quite tough. Gunn confessed: “I’m miserable. Really, I’m miserable. But hopefully, it’s for the greater good.”
When he said “the greater good” he was basically talking about the entire future of the DCU, which is currently hanging in the balance. Ooft. But, after the hugely welcoming response today’s trailer has received so far, I think there’s enough evidence to be an early cause for celebration.
Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luther is “sort of a sorcerer”
A recent interview with CB saw Gunn talking about his reimagined version of Lex Luther being inspired by the Silver Age of DC comics, and describing him as “sort of a sorcerer.” Interesting!
According to Gunn: “Lex is really a sort of sorcerer in a way. He’s a scientist, but he’s so good at science and I think of him as like a sorcerer.”
This could be a really exciting, fun take on the villain, and at least for me, that is very welcome news. Plus, Hoult’s certainly got the chops! I’m excited.
James Gunn wants Superman to be a symbol of ‘unity’
In a world filled with division, could Superman restore some balance to the world? That’s certainly Gunn’s hope here.
In an interview with IGN, Gunn said: “Listen, I do think that things have become really polarizing, and my life is just not that. The internet has become polarizing, and it’s much more polarizing than life is.
“I live in rural Georgia and I have friends of all different political persuasions. I’m not a person that believes in cutting someone out because their politics are different than mine.”
What we know about Krypto the Dog
In a recent press event, James Gunn talked about the dog, Krypto, who’s featured in the trailer – and what his relationship is like with Superman. Here’s what he had to say about that:
I think we’re seeing that from the beginning we’re seeing a little bit of a different side of Superman than what we’ve seen. This movie at the end of the day is not about power. This movie is about a loose term of the word a human being and who he is as a person and virtually struggling in his day-to-day life, and we see a different aspect of him in the beginning.
His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.
Release date
Superman is set to launch the movie aspect of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1, and you’ll be able to watch it when it’s released on 11th July 2025.
