The first trailer for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has just dropped from Marvel Studios – and it looks really fun, with standout retro comic-style animation inspired by the art of Steve Ditko!
I find it really lovely that style-wise, Marvel are going back to their roots by using the art style of Ditko, the original co-creator of Marvel’s Spider-Man and creator of Doctor Strange.
As for the 10-episode series, it follows Peter Parker as he’s just beginning his journey as everyone’s beloved Spidey! However, because this is Marvel, the series is set in an alternate timeline, and this one includes Norman Osborn (from Oscorp) as Parker’s mentor, rather than Tony Stark.
According to Marvel’s Head of Animation, Brad Winderbaum, who spoke about the show previously:
I mean, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is amazing, to say the least. I think it’s really going to surprise people. It is very much like a cut from that Steve Ditko era of the comics.
It’s Peter Parker back in high school just trying to make it work, take care of his aunt, completely broke, and having to be a superhero.
It’s so essentially Spider-Man, and what Jeff Trammell, the creator of that show, did, which I think people are going to love, is he built this ensemble of characters around Peter that you fall in love with.
Similarly, just because it’s long-form storytelling, as those relationships brew when the stakes rise in that first season, things feel really tragic and dangerous, and pretty incredible. So, I love that show.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man features a voice cast including Hudson Thames (What If…?), Eugene Byrd (Spidey and His Amazing Friends, 8 Mile), Grace Song (Kidding), Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Kari Wahlgren (FLCL, Rick and Morty), and Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Pokemon Master Journeys: The Series). Not to mention Charlie Cox and Paul F. Tompkins!
I’m really quite excited about this new series – once the art style piqued my interest, I had to admit the show really does look super fun, too!
And you’ll be able to watch Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man when it airs on 29th January!
