In an interview with Polygon, Jenny Jarzabski Starfinder’s senior developer, said;
What could be more iconic than an adventuring party battling a dragon? For the dreadful foe we chose the laser-eyed Akashic dragon, a new creature designed for Starfinder Second Edition. For the battle’s setting we selected a futuristic museum full of artifacts from the era of Paizo’s other game, Pathfinder.
Jenny explained that the team worked with Kent Hamilton, Paizo’s concept artist, on a cover to show how fantasy and sci-fi come together in the hi-tech Starfinder setting.
The characters fighting the dragon are the iconic Starfinder characters, with names, backgrounds, and personalities, such as Zemir, the witchwarper, and Obozaya, the soldier.
Starfinder 2e is fully compatible with Pathfinder 2e; however, the game designer also said that current Starfinder players will want to keep some first-edition books in the sci-fi range, such as Pact Worlds and Near Space. We don’t know for certain, but this might well mean the new game will expand on, rather than rewrite, Starfinder’s busy lore.
Jenny has also been giving interviews, and the YouTube channel The Gallant Goblin has one with them from the 2024 Gen Con.
In The Gallant Goblin video, Jenny holds the playtest copy with a different cover and speaks briefly about the compatibility efforts. It might be a mild spoiler, but she also talks about the “Planet” Octurn while discussing the adventure A Cosmic Birthday.
