Back in 2023, for the annual Savage Worlds creator jam, RPG designer Alb’ created the Ultimate Reverie Jumpstart. There’s no finished Ultimate Reverie.
Ultimate Reverie Jumpstart is free to download and introduces some bold new rules to Savage Worlds, an adventure called Out of the Frying Pan, 8 pregens and 17 new monsters.
You will need a separate copy of Savage Words to play it.
What caught my attention are the rule tweaks. Ultimate Reverie swaps out Wounds for Health Points (HP). One of the changes this brings is that a night’s rest is enough all of a character’s health points.
Sleeping is significant in the setting (though I’m not sure how much it will matter in the adventure) because the world has Dream Zones. Dream Zones are places where magic is strong enough to seep into this world. If a group sleeps within the Dream Zone and have a Dream Crystal, then they can decide whether to wake up and get the day to do over. It’s a magical restart. What they experienced the day before sleep is like a vivid and prophetic dream.
I immediately thought of Groundhog Day-style animes. There’s Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- but this TTRPG is less brutal (except characters have to be alive to sleep here), but also Steins;Gate, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Erased.
If that’s enough to give the Ultimate Reverie Jumpstart a bit of a JRPG spin then the Monstrous Economy rules add to it. When monsters are slain, they leave behind “Sol” pebbles. These are used as currency in the game.
