The game designers and writers known as Pangur Ban Collective has launched their first Kickstarter. The campaign is for a TTRPG called Runecaster.
In Runecaster, characters are rookie mages experimenting with dangerously cryptic runes to forge spells. Players actually draw the runes. You can follow the campaign or jump straight to a pledge.
The goal of Runecaster is to encourage players to be creative with magic. Spells in the game are a back-and-forth between the GM and the players. When the player starts narrating how the magic works once the runes are drawn, the GM finishes that description.
While the PCs are beginners when the game starts, the intent is that they do not stay at that level for frustratingly long. The more a character casts, the better they’ll get at it … but they could also shortcut that and strike a deal with a mysterious patron. What could go wrong?
Pangur Ban Collective says the TTRPG suits people looking for something a bit wilder and more unpredictable, who want to learn through failure in game play and perhaps do the magic school setting differently.
What makes Runecaster unique is that you can actually draw the runes. Runes are drawn in concentric circle, and they are optimized for quick and continuously scribing. You might even create magical spells in real life!
A PDF copy of Runecaster is the reward for backers at the $15 level.
Partnering with DriveThruRPG, Pangur Ban Collective has a softcover and PDF combo at $20. You won’t get the softcover, though, but you will get the at-cost coupon.
The only other tier is $40, and for that, players get their name listed as a Grand Mage in the book along with the PDF and at-cost coupon deal.
Runecaster is slated for May this year. The Kickstarter runs up to February 1st.
