Vortex Verlag has revealed the cover of the forthcoming fantasy horror Serenissima Obscura.
The image was revealed on the Backerkit page for the RPG. The countdown is still over 100 days to go, but we’ve been excited about Serenissima Obscura since midway through last year when designer Melina Sedó told us a little about the game in an interview.
Serenissima Obscura is first and foremost a horror adventure. But below the surface of this wonderful city, an old evil has dreamed up a nightmare, that slowly seeps into the real world. The terror will be very palpable. It is therefore much darker than TSWL.
TSWL is The Straight Way Lost, a 5e-powered adventure set in a fantasy Renaissance Italy, Heaven and Hell.
Serenissima Obscura will also be 5e compatible but it’ll also work with other systems.
At its dark heart, Serenissima Obscura is a large setting that mixes historical information and inspiration with mystical and it ais lso a twenty-eight-module sandbox adventure. Yes, 28.
The image is not in the typical dimensions for a front cover and (we assume) is actually the full spread with the back of the book on the left and the front cover on the right. It shows tendrils, monsters and apparently supernatural women churning out the canals of Venice.
We know the setting/sandbox will introduce the new species, The Children of the Lagoon.
We asked Melina about the canals;
The water will certainly play a big role in the adventure. We also plan to introduce a mechanism to handle the involvement of players in sea battles, but the canals themselves will not be related to a specific magical concept.
But we are building on our concept of “Permanence and Possibility”, elaborating it and presenting a “tidal” phenomenon that will influence how magic works in the “real” Venice and its shadow version.
