It’s felt like a lifetime ago since 28 Weeks Later, and like me, many of you have been eagerly waiting for updates on 28 Years Later whilst keeping half an eye on IMDb… and now finally we’ve got some story details for you!
Seeing the trailer was an exciting moment, although Sony have kept the story details under wraps – until now! This comes straight from the horse’s (okay, Danny Boyle’s) mouth (via Empire): “It was a wholly different approach. It was about what that 28 years gives you.”
I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I’m intrigued – which I’m sure is the intention.
The article has given some vital details of what’s actually going on in the world Boyle and Alex Garland created all those years ago with 28 Days Later – and, apparently, the rest of the world kind of just got on with things more or less rage virus-free, and left Britain to it!
The central characters featured in 28 Years Laters live on a smaller island which only connects to the mainland at low tide. They live in a “closed and necessarily very tight community. There are very strict defence laws, obviously, to survive that long in what is effectively an ongoing hostile environment. They’ve created a successful community, as they see it.”
Going to the mainland has become a sort of ‘rite of passage’ for people in the community when they turn a certain age… and that’s where we’ll see things go a bit awry.
Here’s a quick refresher on the teaser trailer for you, now you have a bit more context:
28 Years Later will star Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. And you’ll be able to catch it in cinemas when it’s released on 20th June, 2025.
