A new trailer has dropped from A24, for an awkward dark comedy called Friendship starring Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson, and… we’re a little confused about how to feel.
Described by A24 as “a laugh-until-you-cry nightmare comedy about male bonding gone awry”, it’s certainly got a friendship gone wrong vibe, but it also just leaves you with awkward feelings of ‘what did I just watch?’. ‘Nightmare’ does seem fairly accurate, though.
Here’s the official description:
When an errant delivery pulls suburban dad Craig Waterman (Robinson) into the orbit of his mysterious and charismatic new neighbour Austin Carmichael (Rudd). A sweet bromance seems to blossom over an innocent evening of urban exploration, punk rock, and a mutual appreciation for paleolithic antiquities.
But what should have been the start of a beautiful friendship is soon waylaid as Craig’s obsessive personality begins to alienate his new pal, subsequently inducing a spiral that threatens to upend Craig’s entire life.

Friendship is Andrew DeYoung‘s directorial debut. The film also stars Kate Mara and Jack Dylan Grazer.
It seems to me like you might have to be in a specific mood for this movie, and it’s maybe not one for everyone. I watched the trailer and didn’t come away thinking this is something I really want to watch, or find out more about. I didn’t laugh, I didn’t think it was funny, and I didn’t know how to feel.
But, who knows – maybe future trailers will change my mind. It’ll certainly be a talking point for anyone who does feel brave enough.
Friendship is out sometime in May 2025.
What do you think of the trailer for Friendship, and the concept of ‘nightmare comedy’? Is this one that’s going on your list? Comment below, as I’d appreciate some thoughts of bounce off of.
