Good news for UK PS3 owners. The Guardian is reporting that both the ITV and C4 on Demand services are expected to join the iPlayer on the PS3 this week. Of course, they’ll be wishing they had fairly fat broadband for this.
This is an interesting turn of events as under Michael Grade ITV was unwilling to let their content go and allow other companies to show it. That’s one of the reasons they didn’t hook up with Hulu. That’s also one of the reasons Hulu flopped in the UK.
I doubt most Geek Native readers will be thrilled to get Coronation Street or Emmerdale on their PS3. However, what this means is that the gaming console is becoming more mainstream. There may be families who will now buy the PS3 in lieu of getting another cable box. This is good for gaming.
Sony estimate that about 80% of the 4m PS3 consoles in the UK are connected to the internet via broadband.
