Today, Creative Director for Dungeons & Dragons, Chris Perkins, announced his retirement from Wizards of the Coast after 28 years with the company.
The long-time designer and Creative Director is going out on a high, considering the recent 50th anniversary and new edition of the game mean the game has never been so popular.
And, knowing he’s leaving a strong legacy in very capable hands, he also said he’s looking forward to experiencing D&D as a player and fan once more. Who can blame him?
Perkins released a statement via BlueSky, saying:
Today I retire from Wizards of the Coast after 28 years. With D&D’s 50th anniversary wrapping up and the revised rulebooks doing gangbusters, this is the perfect fairytale ending for me. I can’t wait to enjoy D&D purely as a fan again, knowing the game is in good hands. See you in the Feywild!

Wizards of the Coast released this statement via the Dungeons & Dragons Facebook page:
We can’t thank Chris enough for the decades of work he has poured into Wizards of the Coast, as D&D would not be what it is today without his numerous contributions. While we are incredibly sad to see him go, we welcome him at our game any day.
While at D&D, Chris mentored the next generation of leaders who are stepping up as he moves on to enjoy his retirement. D&D is in good hands with the team.
Perkins has definitely left a strong mark on D&D over the years, from being the editor of Dungeon magazine, to lead story designer on Curse of Strahd, and of course later becoming Creative Director for the game.
